Kentucky Derby Picks: Looking for a Longshot

With the price of California Chrome dropping, horseplayers will be looking for more betting value for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

The current price on California Chrome is 11-4 in the 19-horse field according to BetOnline.ag’s racebook and the price looks as if it may head south throughout the day on Saturday.

One possible longshot that may be worth a look is the colt that ran third in the Santa Anita. Candy Boy prompted the early pace and did not have enough punch left in the stretch in the race, beaten 8 3/4 lengths by the favorite.

That is a lot of lengths to make up, but this colt was making his first start off a two month break, having won the Robert B. Lewis (G2) two back in his three-year-old debut.

The colt capped off his juvenile campaign by running a decent second to then early Derby favorite Shared Belief in the Cash Call Futurity (G1). His last outing should serve as a good prep and the strategy today according to trainer John Sadler is to have him off the pace, probably sitting mid pack with jockey Gary Stevens.

The Sadler trainee is tactical enough to make a move on the far turn and he should be right in the mix as they turn for home, and that is where most of the recent winners of this race have been. He has a stronger pedigree than the chalk, and he certainly is going to offer much more value.

He is by Grade 1 winner Candy Ride, who won the Pacific Classic (G1) at 1 1/4 miles and is out of an In Excess mare that won going long. Stevens is a three-time winning Derby rider.
