Field Taking Shape for the 2015 Kentucky Derby

With all the stops on the Road to the Kentucky Derby complete the field for the 141st running of the Run for the Roses is taking shape, with a field of 20 likely to meet on the first Saturday of May at Churchill Downs for the two most exciting minutes in sports.

International Star topped the Road to the Derby points standings by sweeping the three points races at Fair Grounds. The Michael Maker trainee won the LeComte (G3), Risen Star (G2) and Louisiana Derby (G2) in his last three starts and accumulated 171 points.

Currently the colt is at early betting odds of 16-1 at Bovada for the Kentucky Derby.

The undefeated Dortmund finished second in the Kentucky Derby points standings with 170. Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who has won the Kentucky Derby three times, the colt has racked up six wins, his last a victory in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 4.

Bovada has the son of 2008 Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown at 9-2 in early Derby betting odds.

Baffert will saddle the betting favorite in American Pharoah, who won the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park in his last start. The 100 points for the win moved him up to fourth in the Derby points standings. He is the early wagering favorite at 2-1 at Bovada.

The Todd Pletcher trained Carpe Diem finished third in the points standings with 164. The colt won the Toyota Blue Grass (G1) in his final prep for Louisville. His current odds for the Derby at Bovada stand at 6-1, good for third choice.

The top 20 in points earn their way into the Kentucky Derby field. Currently on the outside looking in sitting in 21st place is Madefromlucky, who if he gets in would give Pletcher five runners.

Michael Dempsey will be providing full analysis of the Kentucky Oaks and Derby Day cards at turfnsport.com.
