Wise Dan Headlines Downs After Dark at Churchill Downs

The 2012 Horse of the Year Wise Dan will be in action on Saturday night at Churchill Downs where he will face seven overmatched foes in the $150,000 Firecracker Handicap (G2).

The six-year-old gelding is the 2-5 morning line favorite and is looking for his seventh consecutive graded stakes win. His last win came over the Churchill Downs turf in the Turf Classic (G1) on Derby Day.

The race anchors an 11-race card on the final “Downs After Dark” program of the summer, with the races getting underway at 6:00 ET. The Firecracker post time is 10:11 ET, the ninth race on the card.

The gelding may only face six as trainer Tom Proctor indicated he will only run Corporate Jungle (12-1) if Wise Dan does not show up.

Of the six remaining Lea (4-1) would have the best shot of an upset. The colt won the Commonwealth (G3) over the turf at Churchill Downs last November. The colt came back off a six month layoff with a win versus Alw-3 optional claimers in his first start off the bench.

The co-feature on the card is the $100,000 Bashford Manor (G3) for two-year-olds going six furlongs on the main track. A field of seven will line up led by a pair from the Steve Asmussen barn.

Asmussen has won this race three times, the last coming in 2010 with Kantharos. This year the barn will send out recent maiden winners D’cajun Cat (2-1) and Gun Roar (4-1). Check out Turf ‘n’ Sport for full selections and  analysis of the Bashford Manor.

There is plenty of stakes action throughout the country on Saturday including a pair of graded stakes at Belmont Park.

The $200,000 New York (G2) drew a field of eight fillies and mares that will go 1 ¼ miles on the inner turf course. The Chad Brown trained Dream Peace is the 5-2 morning line favorite. The mare was the beaten favorite in the Beaguay (G3) in his last outing where she had the lead heading for home and weakened to finish third.

The $150,000 Victory Ride (G3) drew a field of eight including three fillies sent out by the Todd Pletcher barn. The one to beat is Kauai Katie, who is undefeated in six sprint races, her only two losses coming at a mile or farther.

She is the stronger half of the entry with Teen Pauline at even money, and Pletcher will also send out Eight Belles (G2) runner up Fusaichiswonderful, who is the 5-2 second choice in the race.
