The fireworks won’t end on the Fourth of July as there is plenty of outstanding stakes action coming up on Saturday including 10 graded stakes races.
Calder hosts four graded stakes as part of their Summit of Speed program with over $1 million in purses up for grabs.
The $350,000 Smile Sprint Handicap (G2) drew a full field that includes last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) champion Trinniberg (4-1) as well as Jackson Bend (8-1), winner of last year’s Carter Handicap (G1) and the 2011 Forego (G1).
The $350,000 Princess Rooney (G1) drew a competitive field of 12 fillies and mares including five that will be saddled by trainer Martin Wolfson. His best shot among the five may be with Spectacular Sky (6-1), who has won three of her four starts over the Calder main track.
The 5-2 morning line favorite is the Wesley Ward trained Judy the Beauty, who is coming off a runner up finish in the Winning Colors (G3) at Churchill Downs. The filly has landed in the exacta in all nine of her career starts.
At Hollywood Park a field of five will line up in the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) led by 4-5 morning line favorite Game On Dude for the Bob Baffert Barn.
The gelding comes into the race having won his last four starts. He is perfect since fading to finish seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) as the beaten favorite last fall at Santa Anita Park.
The Baffert trainee’s biggest threat may come from Clubhouse Ride (2-1) who was the victor in the Californian (G2) in his last outing on June 1. The five year old ran second to Game On Dude in his three previous starts.
The co-feature at Hollywood Park is the $150,000 Royal Heroine Mile (G2) for fillies and mares going one mile on turf. The race drew six led by Schiaparelli (2-1).
Last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) winner Little Mike is back in action on the Jersey Shore. The gelding is the 2-1 morning line favorite in the $500,000 United Nations (G1) at Monmouth Park.
The Dale Romans trainee is looking to bounce back off a pair of sub-par efforts in Dubai and faces seven foes in the United Nations.
The two with the best shots of pulling off an upset are the speedy Teaks North (4-1) and Skyring (9-2) who are both coming off stakes wins.
In New York a field of five will line up in the $350,000 Suburban Handicap (G2). The Bill Mott trained Flat Out is the even money favorite, looking to bounce back off his lone loss over the Belmont Park main track in five trips when third in the Met Mile (G1).
He faces Pimlico Special (G3) winner Last Gunfighter (2-1) and last year’s Travers (G1) winner Alpha (5-1).
The $200,000 Dwyer (G2) for three-year-olds drew a field of six led by the Todd Pletcher trained duo of Battier (2-1) and Abraham (5-2).
